If you own a nursery glider at home, you are most likely using it all the time, feeding the baby, putting him to sleep, or reading a book. With all these activities done in your chair, it is normal, like any other upholstered furniture for it to wear and tear sometimes with a nursery glider slipcover and sometimes without.

Though there are nursery gliders that are easy to clean with only a simple wipe, prolonged stains can’t be easily wiped out, and some cushion covers are made of cloth, so the only way to clean them is through washing them.

But we all know that we can’t wash them every time it gets stained since it is being used every day. There’s just no time to wait for it every time you wash it.

One way to keep your gliders in tip top shape is by using a separate slipcover. A slipcover is a close-fitting protective cover that can be glided off and on a piece of padded furniture.

Slipcovers are generally made of material. Slipcovers slide on and off, are easy to maintain, and may be detached for periodic change, cleaning, moving, or storing.

This way, you can just change the slipcover and wash the stained one without waiting for it to dry first before you can use your glider.

Slipcovers are sold in most home sections of department stores, but if you have a model of a glider that has an intricate installation, you’ll most probably have a hard time looking for a slipcover for your chair.

One option you can do is to make a slipcover yourself! This is one simple way for improving a glider, and it is easy enough to do, you only need basic sewing skills and about a day to do it, and you get to choose the design and material you want to use for your slipcover!

Step 1: Go fabric shopping

If you are planning to change your glider slipcover, one thing that is a must to do is choose the fabric wisely. You should go for fabric that is light in weight. The fabric that you choose should not be very thin but not too thick either. This is your chance to have your glider covered in the design, color, and material you want so go crazy with fabric shopping! These covers will last you a long time, so there’s nothing wrong in splurging a little.

Make sure to choose the material that is durable and can withstand a number of washes without ruining the cover or fading its color. Also, choose the fabric that is easy to wash and dry so that you don’t face any issues later.

Lastly, make sure that the fabric design and color match your whole nursery. Check the color scheme of your nursery before going to fabric shopping. This will save your time and energy!

Step 2: Measure and pattern

You must get the fabric according to the size of your glider chair. Measure the glider chair before you make a purchase. Take out the cushions from your glider chair and measure them to know how much of the fabric you’ll need. Make a pattern of the cushions from an old fabric or even from old newspapers. Wash and dry your new fabric and iron it if needed.

Step 3: Form and cut

Create a pattern of your glider with accurate measurement and cut your fabric using the pattern you have formed. Cut around each cushion – one inch away from the sides and top and two inches away from the bottom of the cushion. You can measure and draw your cutting line with a fabric pencil/pen beforehand if you find it helpful. Drawing the cutting lines will help you cut the fabric more accurately and in the right shape. It eliminates the chances of mistakes.

Step 4: Sew away

This is one of the most important steps that require lots of attention from your side. When sewing the cover for the back cushion or those that has straps in them, you need to allow two small holes in it for the straps to come through. Start sewing the sides of the fabric first and then the other parts.

You can choose from Velcro, zipper or snaps, whatever you prefer to keep your covers in place. Start sewing them in every opening of your cover. Zip is a great option because it makes managing the covers easy, you can simply take the cover off whenever you have to wash, and you can put it back.

The great thing about making your own covers is that you can add pockets on it if your original cover doesn’t have any. Add these too if you want additional storage in your chair.

Step 5: Try them on

Once you are done with stitching, and it is attached, it is now time to try out your finished product! This is to make sure that each cover for each cushion fits snugly in place. If there are adjustments needed to be made, you can still do so.

And there you have it! A fabulous new glider without actually buying a new one! This is not just easier, but it will save you a lot of money. So try making your own glider slipcover and live in peace.

Cleaning and maintaining your glider chair has never been easier now that you can make more covers from other designs and never have to worry about keeping your glider chair clean and looking brand new anymore! Have a wonderful day!
